Benefits of Hapag-Lloyd Reefer

In choosing Hapag-Lloyd as internationally recognized quality carrier you will directly benefit from our profound expertise in professional handling of temperature-sensitive products.

Cold

Hapag-Lloyd refrigerated containers can maintain a constant temperature between –35°C / –31°F and 30°C/ 86°F, even with outside temperatures up to 50°C / 122°F the refrigerated container technology allows to keep your cargo fresh and deliver best quality to the destination. You will find the temperature guideline for your product under temperature controlled cargo (our Reefer Brochure, page 12ff refers).

Precise

With some fruit, such as bananas, the slightest temperature deviations are decisive for the quality of the cargo when it reaches its final destination. Therefore, precise temperatures have the highest technical priority for us. With transportation temperatures above –10°C /14°F the refrigerated container technology allows to reduce the maximum variation to 0.5 degrees. For freezer mode, below –10°C /14°F the refrigerated container technology allows to reduce the maximum variation to one degree only.

Fresh

For controlled atmosphere we provide technologies such as AFAM+, eAutofresh, Transfresh, Maxtend or PurFresh. The interior atmosphere is controlled so that ripening of fruit and flowers can be delayed. Spoiling and mould are suppressed. Hapag-Lloyd uses a range of technologies. We have the best solution ready for each and every cargo.

Well ventilated

For certain goods, such as fresh fruit or ferns, a precisely controlled ventilation system contributes decisively to quality assurance. In Hapag-Lloyd refrigerated containers up to 280m3 of fresh air per hour can be automatically supplied. The ventilation flaps can be opened with up to a 72-hour time delay, an important advantage when the cargo is not sufficiently cooled in advance.

Dry

Apart from temperature our reefers can also reduce the relative humidity when set values lie between 65% and 95%. For bulbs Hapag-Lloyd reefers have a special 'bulb mode’ which automatically provides an optimal atmosphere for transportation.

Gentle

Our refrigerated containers can be programmed in advance for automatic temperature change up to eight times during one voyage. This means sensitive cargo can be gently cooled in stages or the ripening process for fruit can be started before arriving at the destination.

Environmentally friendly

To protect our environment Hapag-Lloyd continually carries out research into better solutions with great success. We have reduced average energy consumption by more than 50% in the last eight years without making compromises on temperature control, but at the same time improving performance. This reduces your product’s carbon footprint. Naturally, all coolant used in our reefers is CFC-free.

Safe and secure

All data relevant to quality, such as temperature, humidity, CO2 content and fresh air supplied, are recorded and can be made available if required. With current technologies, Hapag-Lloyd has also successfully carried out tracking and tracing trials. For tracking and tracing trial shipments, the location and temperature of the refrigerated container can be made available to the customers along the transport chain. Pre-Trip Inspections (PTI) are executed prior to every transport in order to grant highest security and minimized risk.

Large payload

Use of the most modern materials and refrigeration units ensure lower weight for our refrigerated containers and higher payload capacity. With Hapag-Lloyd reefers, customers profit from the highest capacities available, on average 100 to 200 kilograms more, compared to others in the field.

Reliable

High value, sensitive reefer cargo, from the pharmaceutical, chemical or healthcare industries requires particularly careful handling by an especially reliable partner. Here we offer not only our modern equipment and our extensive experience, but also special internal processes that give extra protection to your high value cargo.

Fast cooling

Especially powerful refrigeration units assist in pre-cooling processes, in case that cargoes have not been properly pre-cooled. The considerably faster pull-down times in Hapag-Lloyd reefers facilitates higher quality of your products.

Hygienic

Hapag-Lloyd is the only container line to strictly segregate non-food grade boxes from reefers exclusively used for food transportation. A special interior design provides more hygienic conditions as well as optimal air circulation. Of course our boxes are checked and tested before each and every assignment.

Controlled Atmosphere

Why Controlled Atmosphere reefers technology is recommended for sensitive fruits and vegetables

  • After harvesting, fruits and vegetables consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide & ethylene gas
  • Release of moisture and heat generation provide specific challenges
  • Process of respiration results in deterioration of the product

Purpose of temperature and atmosphere control

  • Fruits and vegetables are still “alive” after harvesting
  • In a standard reefer container such products start to degrade and deteriorate immediately
  • Fruits and vegetables require an adjusted environment to preserve their condition
  • Atmosphere control slows down the ripening process and increases the shelf life of perishable products
  • At Hapag-Lloyd we provide the following technologies: ExtraFresh, Everfresh , Maxtend, Liventus and Air Exchange Management

The technologies represent the following specific advantages to prolong shelf life

  • Slow down of ripening process and reduce risk of decay
  • Decrease of dehydration (no weight loss)
  • Extension of market range from harvest to consumption
  • Maintenance of freshness, color and condition to maintain product quality
  • Prevention / minimization of wastage and financial losses
  • Ocean transport a viable alternative to airfreight

ExtraFresh

A technology designed to control and preserve the desired transport atmosphere for fruits
and vegetables. Hapag-Lloyd ExtraFresh takes advantage of the natural fruit respiration process to slow
down the ripening and thus maintains cargo´s quality and extends the products shelf life.

- Uses natural fruit respiration to slow down ripening.
- Equipped with oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors.
- Equipped with membrane and vacuum pump to extract CO2 produced by the cargo.
- Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air, when O2 levels drop below set point.
- Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes.
- Typical products include avocados, bananas and mangos.

EverFresh

In addition to the technology available with ExtraFresh, the EverFresh technology allows injection of nitrogen and carbon dioxide before and during sea voyage. EverFresh technology is primarily used for low respiring cargo, that cannot produce the optimal atmosphere by natural respiration.

- Equipped with oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors.
- Equipped with membrane and vacuum pump to extract CO2 produced by the cargo.
- Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air, when O2 levels drop below setpoint.
- Active Nitrogen (N2) and CO2 injection during transport.
- As with ExtraFresh technology, EverFresh can also use natural fruit respiration process to slow down ripening
- Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes.
- Especially beneficial for sensitive cargo with high CO2 requirements such as blueberries

Liventus & Maxtend

Liventus and Maxtend fitted containers describe a special supplement for reefer containers. They create a tailor-made atmosphere via pre-trip gas injections. An additional controller is monitoring & recording the atmospheric composition inside the reefer. Such “Controlled Atmosphere” containers are ideal for low respiring cargo.

- Pre-injection gas mixture (N2 and CO2) the system can modify and preserve desired atmosphere
- Equipped with oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors.
- Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air, when O2 levels drop below set point.
- Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes.

Air Exchange Management

Air Exchange Management is an automated ventilation system designed to regulate the oxygen and carbon dioxide level inside the container via the fresh air vents. This technology takes advantage of natural respiration processes of the fruit or vegetables and therefore does not require gas injections. Hapag-Lloyd operates one of the largest reefer fleets capable of Automated Ventilation.

- Uses natural fruit respiration process to slow down ripening.
- Equipped with carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors.
- Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air, when CO2 levels reach set point.
- Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes.

Reefer Cargo Handling

Hapag-Lloyd container depots ensure that reefer boxes are clean and in sound condition upon release for a new transport.

In the interest of exercising best cargo care, we appreciate observation of following recommendations:

Prior to stuffing

  • Ensure only clean reefer container is accepted from depot
  • Observe the use of adequate packaging material
  • Keep in mind plastic wrapping may act as vapor barrier and prevent air circulation around the product
  • Ensure your product temperature reflects transport temperature before stuffing commences
  • Your reefer cargo should preferably be sourced from a refrigerated loading bay

Stuffing of reefer containers

  • Switch off the power-unit during loading operation, to avoid ambient air exchange.
  • Ensure product is evenly stuffed in correct manner to avoid obstructions that can result in hot spots
  • Do not stack boxes above load line; spacers will help to stabilize cargo and ensure optimal airflow
  • Avoid poor air circulation which is amongst primary causes of product deterioration
  • Any free floor area and gaps may not exceed 5% of floor area to avoid negative impact on airflow
  • Use board or dunnage material to avoid gaps and open floor areas
  • Do not load cargo beyond surface provided by „T-Bar“ flooring inside the container
  • To ensure free airflow, no space between cargo units permitted in front of unit air distribution point
  • Adequate refrigeration relies on good air circulation around your entire load

Completing loading operation

  • Close doors properly
  • Ensure correct set point for carrying temperature, humidity and setting of air ventilation
  • Start up reefer power-unit
